The Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) grew from an initial research team formed in the 1960s. It was officially established as a University Centre of The University of Queensland in 1970, with a goal to develop practical technical solutions for large-scale mining and minerals industry challenges.

With an outstanding international reputation as an innovator in mining and mineral processing research, the JKMRC is noted for the widespread use of its research outcomes by industry. It is the largest Australian research centre in this field, and collaborates with major mining and mineral processing research groups worldwide. Research is sponsored by most of the major mining companies.

The Centre is known for the application of research outcomes to create modelling tools, analysis tools and instrumentation, and designs for new equipment. The principal focus is optimisation of mining and mineral processing operations. The current scope of research extends from exploration geometallurgy to comminution and flotation. The integration of models and optimisation across the entire chain of operations is a long-term goal of JKMRC research.

In 1986, JKTech was established to take viable JKMRC research outcomes and deliver technology and solutions to the international minerals industry.  In 2001 JKTech Pty Ltd was incorporated and the company now provides a range of innovative solutions aimed at increasing productivity and metal recovery.  Specialist products and services offered include consulting, mineral liberation analysis bureau service, specialist simulation software, specialist measurement equipment, laboratory testing services and training courses.  JKTech has a global client base extending to over 30 countries.

In 2001 The University of Queensland established the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) to provide a critical mass of researchers with the capability to address the major challenges facing the international minerals industry.  JKMRC is the largest research centre within the SMI.
